The St. Thomas Men’s Basketball Team (3-4) ended its two game winning streak against Seattle (6-1) Saturday, competing on the road.

The Tommies trailed by seven points entering halftime, 35-28, but a 46-point showing by the Redhawks pulled them away.

The basketball team will battle Crown College Thursday at their first home game of the season.

The St. Thomas Women’s Basketball Team (1-5) suffered its fifth loss of the season against North Texas State (4-2) Saturday, losing 81-54 in California.

The Purple had a solid day in rebounding and only had 13 turnovers, but they were unable to overcome cold shooting, with 33 percent from the field – including 2-of-14 from the 3-point range and 6-of-14 at the foul line.

The basketball team will face the University of Northern Iowa Wednesday at home.

Senior forward Grant Loven put up the lone goal for St. Thomas in a 4-1 loss to Big Ten opponent Penn State University in the second game of the two-game series Wednesday night at St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.
The Tommies’ (1-15) offense couldn’t generate enough scoring chances, giving them only 12 shots on net while senior goaltender Jacob Berger took on 36 from the Nittany Lions (9-6).
“It’s really hard to stay in the game with teams like Penn State who come at you in waves and they’re really good at finishing their plays off,” coach Rico Blasi said. “We just didn’t generate enough chances for us to be offensive and get some opportunities.”
The Minnesota Twins and center fielder Byron Buxton agreed to a seven-year, $100 million contract Sunday, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the contract was not yet finalized and pending a physical exam.

Buxton posted an aerial picture of Target Field on his Instagram account with a heart emoji for a caption. The fleet-footed, big-swinging Buxton was only under team control for one more season, raising the possibility of a trade to stem the blow of losing him as a free agent.

Despite some snags along the way in the negotiations, which were complicated by Buxton’s injury history that has significantly limited his availability to the Twins, the 27-year-old never wanted to leave the organization he joined straight out of high school in rural Georgia as the second overall pick in the 2012 draft.
